Just a short post about transport.   I have decided that motorbike with side car is going to the most likely method of getting about in Africa.  Principally because with a motorbike you are more a part of the surroundings that you are travelling through.   It is also a cheaper method of transport, and, to be honest, I have been looking for any excuse to actually learn to ride a motorbike.

When I first thought about the idea of a trip across Africa with Sofia, some one suggested that I look up other women who have traveled solo through Africa on a motorbike.  I had never even thought of it, and probably would never have thought of it, simply because Africa can be dangerous, so more cover rather than exposure is sometimes the best way to go, especially if you are a woman.

Just knowing that women were travelling solo through the dark continent was confirmation enough that this idea would be possible, but to have the option to go by motorbike was like icing on the cake.  Of course, travelling with a child will be adding an extra dimension, however, I am confident that it will be fine.

Of course, when you think about motorbikes and big adventures, you immediately think of Charlie Boorman and Ewan McGreggor.  I watched the Long Way Round and Long Way Down about 6 months ago, and was so inspired.  I never imagined however, that I would actually be planning a similar trip of my own! I have contacted Charlie Boorman through FaeBook, and hoping he will help out with organising the trip with his experience.   I’m not looking for endorsement yet, but it would be really sweet if both guys as a team endorsed the project when I am looking for one.  Fingers crossed!
